South Gippsland Highway Upgrade – Temporary closure of Great Southern Rail Trail

As part of the South Gippsland Highway Upgrade, we’re realigning the highway and upgrading the Great Southern Rail Trail by building a new pedestrian underpass.

While we install the new concrete structure to form the underpass, there will be closures of the rail train near Koonwarra in July.

The rail trail will be closed in the area between Monday, July 12 to Friday,  July 16 (24 hours a day) and again on Monday, July  26 (8am to 5pm).

From Monday 19 July to Friday 30 July pedestrians will have access through this area, however pedestrians will be escorted through the site area and should expect intermittent delays of up to 30 mins.

A bus service will run on the hour and half hour from Meeniyan and Koonwarra for walkers and cyclists.

It is recommended that horses not travel through the area at this time due to the close proximity of heavy machinery.

Weekend pedestrian access will be maintained and the rail trail will completely reopen to all users from Saturday, July 31.
