Subsidence around mine shaft made safe

A WORK crew from South Gippsland Shire Council began the task last week of repairing a patch of the car park behind the shops in Foster, where the ground has subsided in the vicinity of a disused mine shaft.

The area, on the edge of the car park, immediately in front of the sign indicating the site of the old Victory Mine, has been cordoned off for some time, and Council’s engineering department has been monitoring it.

Now, in a project supervised by engineering technical officer Jesse Joyce, the hole is being filled in and capped with steel reinforcement. The repairs are expected to take a couple of weeks to complete and members of the public are asked to maintain a safe distance in the meantime.
