New Maternity Suite

EXPECTANT mothers and their families will be pleased to learn that South Gippsland Hospital’s new birth suite will soon be ready for business. The new facilities will provide much improved amenity and privacy for the care of our maternity patients and newborns. The suite also ensures SGH continues to provide our local community with Level 3 maternity service capability, which is the same as the hospitals at Leongatha and Wonthaggi.

The hospital received a grant to upgrade the maternity suite and operating theatre in 2018 after having lobbied for funding for a number of years.  This is the first stage of the project to be made available for use.

Board Chair Sue Pilkington said that the focus of the Board has been on ensuring that the modest project budget delivered the facilities required to maintain the highest quality of services and healthcare for our community. “We’ve been particularly fortunate to receive very generous financial support from the Hospital Auxiliary, community members and a number of local organisations to allow us to purchase much-needed equipment for the new maternity suite and operating theatre.”

The new operating theatre is still only partially constructed and is on target for completion in June 2020. Following community consultation on the external design in December 2018 we’ve continued to receive very positive feedback as the building works have progressed. When complete the exterior will be enhanced by landscaping that complements this addition to existing buildings and its setting on Station Road.

An Open Day will be held after the building is finished so that our community can appreciate the improved functionality of the new facility and the high quality health services that will continue to be available to our local community, in our local community.
