Foster Pool opens for summer season

FOSTER Swimming Pool opened for the 2014-15 summer season last Saturday, the pool waters at their sparkling blue best. In honour of the occasion, pool managers YMCA had the giant inflatable on the water to provide slippery sliding fun for anyone willing to have a go. It proved a great hit, as did the sausage sizzle put on by the pool committee.

Around 70 or so people attended the opening on Saturday. A similar number went along the next day, when the weather was much warmer, to get some relief from the heat.

Arrangements this season will see Foster Pool open until Labor Day (Monday March 9) 2015. Opening hours are 12pm to 7pm through the school holidays and on weekends and between 3pm and 7pm during school term – but only on days forecast to be at least 26 degrees Celsius. The opening will depend on the forecast for Leongatha published on the Bureau of Meteorology website at 6pm the evening before.

Season tickets for the pool are available for purchase at the pool or from Atoll Travel in Bridge Street, Foster. One lucky season ticket holder has won back his membership fee. Clinton Morton’s name was drawn out at the Christmas Street Party in Foster’s main street last Friday evening, winning him free family membership for the season.

In more good news for local swimmers, South Gippsland Shire Council CEO Tim Tamlin has confirmed that an independent Foster Pool Lap Swimmers Group will be established.

The Lap Swimmers Group will have early access to the pool three mornings a week – Mondays, Wednesdays and Fridays – even though the pool will not open for general use until noon (and then only if the forecast temperature is 26 degrees). The times are yet to be confirmed, but will probably be from 7am to 8.45am. Only people who join the group by signing an indemnity form (putting participation entirely at their own risk) and pay a one-off fee of $10 (to cover heating costs) in addition to their season’s membership, will be able to join the sessions. The pool will not be open to general public admissions during the Lap Swimmers Group hours. Only people with the ability to swim laps can join.

Ian Lyon will be contacting all people who have previously been lap swimmers to gauge their preferred hours and to organise a roster for pool opening preparations.

It is hoped to start the Lap Swimmers Group next Monday, December 29, or as soon after that date as can be arranged.

Anyone interested in joining the Lap Swimmers Group and/or being on the roster to assist with the opening preparations is invited to contact Ian Lyon at [email protected]  or mobile 0439 821 082.
