Fire Destroys House, Contents at Yanakie

A FIRE that “completely destroyed” a house and everything in it at Yanakie on Saturday night June 3, 2023 was already “fully alight” when emergency services reached the scene.

None of the people who lived in the house were home when the fire started and the cause of the blaze is as yet unknown.

A driver travelling along the Meeniyan-Promontory Road near Davies Road noticed flames coming from the house on the east side of the roadway and raised the alarm at about 8.15 pm.

Fish Creek & District Country Fire Authority (CFA) Fire & Rescue Captain Kerry Senior said three Corner Inlet district CFA brigades responded to the call-out.

“Fish Creek’s tanker number 1 had four of our members on board, and our tanker number 2 brought another two firefighters,” she said.

“Also in attendance was the Yanakie Fire Brigade – CFA and its tanker and ultralight with four or five personnel, and the Foster Fire Brigade’s tanker with four firefighters.

“On arrival at the fire, we found that the single-storey brick house was fully alight,” Ms Senior said.

“It appeared as though the house had been burning for some time before the passer-by alerted the authorities,” she said.

“All of the occupants of the house were out, were not at home, when the fire started, and its cause is still to be determined.

“The three brigades remained at the scene for more than three hours, during which we used an on-site dam to fill up the four tankers three times each,” Ms Senior said.

“We also all wore breathing apparatus while fighting the fire because there was a little bit of asbestos in the house.

“At the end, we used a thermal imaging camera to go over the entire house to look for any remaining hot spots and to make sure all of them were properly extinguished.

“The house and its contents were completely destroyed by the blaze,” she said.

“Fire investigators, from either the CFA or from Fire Safety Victoria, were expected to examine the scene on Sunday, the day after the fire, and they will report their findings to the householder and the relevant insurance company.”
