Fence marks start of Foster Indoor Stadium upgrade

• Temporary fencing was installed around the Foster Indoor Stadium last Thursday, marking the start of the South Gippsland Shire Council’s $2.5 million stadium upgrade project.

STELLmesh fencing has now been installed around the Foster Indoor Stadium, marking the start of the South Gippsland Shire Council’s long-awaited $2.5 million stadium upgrade project.

Contractors erected the temporary fence last Thursday February 18, 2021, incorporating a section of the Foster Showgrounds’ Station Road boundary fence to create what shire chief executive officer Kerryn Ellis described as a “safe work space”.

The shire successfully applied for funding through the Victorian Government’s $68 million Community Sports Infrastructure Stimulus Program, aimed at building and redeveloping community sports facilities across the State.

South Gippsland Shire received a grant of $2,260,000 with the council contributing a further $253,000, for a total of $2,512,000.

The Foster Indoor Stadium contract was awarded to Becon Constructions, which has undertaken other works throughout the municipality in the past, including for the new buildings at the Leongatha Hospital.

Shire administration panel chair Julie Eisenbise said “the Foster Indoor Stadium is an asset to our local community that is used by a range of sporting groups from basketball to badminton.

“Not only does it host a number of sporting clubs, it is also a great venue for the Foster craft market, the University of the Third Age and other community events,” she said.

“With this new stadium, it will be fantastic to see what else this amazing space can be used for.”

Ms Eisenbise said the redevelopment work will include “a compliant basketball court, improved changerooms, a kitchen and kiosk, meeting rooms, a dry program area, and storage space,” she said.

“Formalised parking and exterior building beautification will take place,” she said.

“It will be a welcomed boost to Foster, and we are grateful for the funding we have received.”
