Cup Weekend roundup

THERE is much on offer in the district over Cup Weekend and whether your taste runs to flowers and plants, food and wine, art and craft or to finding a great bargain, it’s the perfect time to get out and about. Here’s a selection of activities and events on offer.

Horticultural events

  • THE 54th Welshpool & District Horticultural Society’s Spring Flower Show begins on Friday October 31 at the Welshpool Memorial Hall, from 1pm to 5pm with the official opening at 2pm by Deputy Mayor Cr. Jeanette Harding. The Spring Flower Show continues on Saturday November 1 from 10am to 4.30pm. See beautiful flowers, abundant veggies, succulents, floral art and garden photo completion. Refreshments available. A plant sale will be held in the room at the rear.
  • The Meeniyan Garden Walks offer four beautiful and very different gardens to wander through this Saturday for a total of $10. Tickets available on the day from 10am to 3pm at the Meeniyan Town Hall. Perhaps enjoy a cuppa at one of Meeniyan’s many cafés in between. Call Robyn Nottage on 0409 564 945 for further details.
  • VISIT Raywood Open Garden, 22 Ameys Track, Foster, on Monday (November 3) from 10am to noon. Entry fee $10 includes morning tea and lucky gate prizes. Show your support at this Pink Ribbon fundraiser and dress with a touch of pink.

Markets

  • THE Promontory Home Produce & Craft Market will be held at the Foster Showgrounds on Sunday morning, November 2. See over 200 stalls with an amazing range of goods on offer.
  • A MONSTER Trash and Treasure sale will be held at the Toora Pool complex on Saturday from 9am to 2pm. Barbecue, commando inflatable on pool after lunch. Free entry.
  • THE Toora Lions Den Market will be held on Saturday opposite the ViPlus Dairy Factory from 8am to 12 noon, offering a great range of pre-loved goods.
  • THE Buffalo Community Garage Sale Day will be held this Saturday from 9am onwards. Outside vendors welcome. Sausage sizzle, live entertainment.   • A FOOD Swap is a great chance to exchange your surplus fruit, veggies or plants with others and to perhaps share ideas and recipes. Everyone is welcome to go along to the Food Swap on Saturday from 10.30am to 11.3am at the Community Shop, located at the Foster and District Community House. If you have nothing to swap but have your eye on a particular item, a gold coin donation will be most welcome.

Music, entertainment / food and wine

  • THE Rockin’ the Boat’ Festival, presented by the Port Welshpool Volunteer Coast Guard, will be held this Saturday from 9.30am to 4.30pm at the Port Welshpool Ferry Terminal, with a great artist lineup providing music for all ages, kid’s entertainment, market stalls and much much more.   • THROUGHOUT Cup Weekend and over summer, Golden Creek Olives will be offering farm tours, tastings and oil purchases by appointment.   • THE Cellar Door at Windy Ridge Vineyard will be open on Cup Weekend Saturday through to Tuesday and every weekend from 10am to 5pm.   • THE Catholic Church Cup Day barbecue will be held at the Bell’s property at 1780 Meeniyan-Promontory Rd, Fish Creek from 11am. BYO folding chairs, nibbles, drinks and glasses, desserts and salads. Fashions on the Field will be hotly contested. $10 pp.

Exhibitions

  • Stockyard Gallery: the annual Foster Photography Club’s Exhibition and Sale is on display at the gallery, located at the corner of Main and McDonald streets, Foster, daily from 10am to 4pm. View some amazing work by local photographers and perhaps pick up a unique Christmas present.
  • Gecko Studio Gallery, Fish Creek: A White Act, featuring the unique artworks of Gabrielle Woodham, is on display Thursday through to Monday from 10am to 5pm. The gallery is located at 15 Falls Road, Fish Creek and can be contacted on 5683 2481.
  • The Alison Lester Gallery: Located at the corner of Falls and Meeniyan Promontory roads, Fish Creek, is open Thursday through to Monday from 10am to 4pm and on Cup Day from 9am to 1pm.
  • THE South Gippsland Group CWA Inc.will be presenting an Art and Craft and Home Industries Exhibition on Saturday and Sunday from 10am to 4pm at the Foster War Memorial Arts Centre. Food and other goods available for purchase.
  • EXPERIENCE the artistic talents of the Foster Primary School students in their art exhibition to be held at the Foster and District Community House, from 10am to 2pm this Saturday through to November 6.

Action, thrills and spills

  • The 18th Annual State Cattle, Sheep, Dog and Duck Trials (incorporating the Working Dog Festival) will be held Saturday and Sunday (November 1 and 2) at Beloka Kelpies, Welshpool. Come along for a great family weekend and watch the champion working dogs in action plus plenty of fun events for kids and City Slickers: Dog High Jump, Farm Agility, Working Dog Race, Puppy on Sheep, free work instinct tests. Camping $10.
  • Be spooked at the Coal Creek Ghost Tour on Friday October 31 (Halloween), from 5.30pm to 10.30pm. Free entry.
