Council takes over Koonwarra landfill

FOLLOWING the dismissal of its transfer station contractors on October 7, South Gippsland Shire Council has moved swiftly to ensure that the community’s domestic and commercial waste disposal requirements continue to be met.

Recently appointed Waste Management Coordinator Peter Roberts advised that as well as resuming responsibility for the transfer stations, Council has taken control of the Koonwarra landfill – the only landfill in the shire – and commenced the Cell 3 construction process to expand its capacity.

“While the tender for the transfer stations’ management has been advertised, the landfill and Cell 3 construction will be managed in-house,” said Mr Roberts. “Our engineers have already been on site to move the project forward expediently, and weather permitting, Cell 3 is expected to be completed by early 2012.”

Council does not expect any disruption to services at the Koonwarra landfill prior to opening up Cell 3.

“Continuity of services is vital for the wellbeing of residents and the commercial viability of many businesses, and we take that responsibility seriously,” said Mr Roberts, who joins South Gippsland after several years with Bass Coast Shire Council, and brings broad local knowledge and experience to the position.
