Australia Day Awards nominations now open

THE 2023 South Gippsland Australia Day Awards are now open. The awards provide an opportunity for hard-working residents to be recognised for the significant contribution they make to their local community.

There are three award categories:

  • Citizen of the Year
  • Young Citizen of the Year
  • Community Event of the Year

The Citizen of the Year award aims to celebrate the people in our community who dedicate their time and effort into making South Gippsland a great place to live. To nominate someone for Citizen of the Year, you just need to answer two short questions: ‘Why should your nominee be Citizen of the Year?’ and ‘Is there an outstanding contribution they have made this year?’. Two letters supporting the nomination need to be supplied.

The process for Young Citizen is similar and is open to any residents of South Gippsland Shire aged between 12 and 25 years.

This year, we are also pleased to welcome back the Community Event of the Year category after a two-year hiatus. The category was temporarily suspended due to COVID which caused the cancellation of many events across South Gippsland. The award is a great way for event organisers to showcase their event and the positive impact it has had on their local community.

Nominees in all categories will be celebrated at an Australia Day Awards event at 6.30pm on Wednesday 18 January, 2023 at the Meeniyan Hall.

Nominations can be submitted at: www.southgippsland.vic.gov.au/AustraliaDay

Nominations close 7 November 2022.  South Gippsland Shire Council  Mayor, Mohya Davies said “South Gippsland Australia Day Awards are a great way to recognise people for their contribution to their local community. We are so fortunate that so many people in our region are willing to roll-up their sleeves and pitch in to support committees, events, festivals, sporting groups, clubs and more. These awards are a small way of letting them know that we see their hard work and appreciate them for doing it.”
