– Another review commencing immediately
THERE were two very significant meetings held last week concerning the future of the Alberton Football Netball League.
The first one was with Devon Won Wron Welshpool FC (the Allies) on Tuesday night where it was indicated to the board of the AFNL that they would be a part of the league in 2018.
They are a fully paid up member of the league and with a new president and committee, have demonstrated that they will be fielding all grades of football and hopefully netball next season.
This was the first hurdle in the continuation of the AFNL for next season.
At a meeting held by the board and the seven clubs the following Wednesday night, it was decided that all clubs will field teams again in the AFNL for 2017.
A draw will be distributed in the coming weeks for next season, and the annual general meeting will be held in early December.
It’s full steam ahead said president Barry Stride after the meeting.
AFL Gippsland Commissioner John White also addressed the meeting and he told The Mirror on Thursday that a new review would commence immediately for the following season, 2019, and there will be changes to all four local leagues.
He warned clubs that there would be major changes and hopefully the results of this review will be known by the middle of next season, so everyone knows what is happening early.
John was pleased with the way the meeting went and said that AFL Gippsland has approved the junior restructure that the AFNL had come up with, although they were just querying the date change from January 1st to October 1st.
The news that the Allies are up and running again, and the appointment of former Sydney Swans player Stevie Wright as coach of MDU has given the AFNL a real boost in recent weeks, and at this stage things are looking promising.
All that is needed is a couple more teams in 2019 and maybe the Alberton Football Netball League will bounce back to being one of the best leagues in Gippsland, like it has always been in the past!
