A cosy festival for all

• Tea-ming up: Fish Creek Primary School students Misha, Jack, Sophie, Toby, Kyan and Anouar couldn’t wait to see the giant tea cosy last week.

FISH Creek is readying itself for a tea cosy festival like no other – and it seems everyone is involved.

Last week students from Fish Creek Primary School gathered around as a giant tea cosy was wrapped around the Fish Creek Community Garden’s giant tea pot.

The kids are excited as anyone, it seems, as the countdown starts toward the iconic event.

“Here what we’re doing today is putting the giant knitted tea cosy on the giant tea pot. The tea cosy was made by the community for last year’s festival,” festival committee member Susan Poletti said.

“We put out a bit of an S.O.S. We asked people to make individual squares, telling them the size. People as far as Welshpool, Sandy Point, Fish Creek made the squares and sent them in. The community garden and the festival committee sat down here and sewed them all together.

“We used it as a blanket, because it was so cold the day we did it. Just out of town is our second tea cosy, which we’ve wrapped around a hay-bail. We call it our Dr Seuss one because it’s a bit way out.”

Susan said the first year was good, but it was improving year by year.

“More of the community have come onboard for us. That was part of the plan, to have a bit of a vision for our town,” she said.

“This year will be bigger, because you can’t even park in Fish Creek on a weekend now. There’s so many people coming. They’ve found Fish Creek.”

Now in its fourth year, the Fish Creek Tea Cosy Festival will run from Saturday, May 19 to Sunday May 27. The festival’s theme is ‘in TEAnational’ and will highlight the many cultures where the making and taking of tea are symbols of hospitality.

Featuring a high tea with entertainment by Ciao Bella, tea cosy demonstrations and workshops with Loani Prior, Bendigo Bank market day and a closing dinner with guest speaker and renowned author Bruce Pascoe.
