Long weekend events

WHILE and about over the Labour Day long weekend, why not drop in to local events, perhaps pick up a bargain at the market, take in a drive-in movie and enjoy relaxing country racing.

Market and Sales

The Promontory Home Produce and Craft Market – the biggest and best in Gippsland – will be held at the Foster Showgrounds on the morning of Sunday March 9. Come along and enjoy around 200 stalls offering a great variety of goods.

Entertainment

WELSHPOOL Basketball Club is holding a Drive-in movie night on Saturday March 8 at the Welshpool Recreation Reserve oval, 95 Port Welshpool Road. The movie shown will be ‘Last Vegas’ starring Michael Douglas, Robert De Niro, Morgan Freeman and Kevin Kline. (Rated G). Gates open at 6pm, the movie starts at dusk. $10 per person, five-years and under free. Come and watch in the comfort of your car tuned to FM radio or BYO chair and blanket to sit on the grass. Dinner available. Family event – no alcohol. The movie will still show even if it’s raining.

Action

THE Stony Creek Cup will be held at Stony Creek Racing Club on Sunday March 9, with the first race at 1pm, last at 5.15pm. It will be a great day of relaxed country racing, with increased prize money, ‘Fashions On The Field’, entertainment for the kids including face painting and jumping castle. (No BYO alcohol or glassware).

Exhibitions

Stockyard Gallery is hosting ‘Studio 5483’ featuring work created under the guidance of Sue Gilford, by nine artists (Kerry Inns, Janie, Frith, Zelda Petherick Robyn McLean, Abigail van Rooyen, Cat Blamey Wheeler, Liana Lux, Rosemary Livingston and Cheryl Roberts). Stockyard Gallery is located at the roundabout, Foster and is open daily over the long weekend from 10am to 4pm. Phone 5682 1125.

‘All About the ’50s’ – an exhibition of items from the 1950s will officially open on Saturday March 8 at the Foster and District Historical Museum in Main Street. Enjoy this ‘blast of the past’, complete with toys, furniture, memorabilia, photos, a small kitchen and lounge room and wedding photos on display inside and perhaps some beautiful vintage cars will be on display outside. Open Saturday, Sunday and Monday from 11am to 3pm. (Open every day during the Easter school holidays).

The Toora Village Artists Collective, (together with the Friends of the Toora Heritage Pear Orchard Inc.), will be showcasing the 3rd Annual Pear Party Exhibition and Competition at The Toora Village Studio Gallery between Friday March 7 and Sunday March 30 and will be open daily during the long weekend. While there, be sure to cast your vote for People’s Choice.

Meeniyan Art Gallery presents ‘Like’ – an exhibition of sculpture by Laurie Collins and super-realist artwork by Sue Osborn. Meeniyan Art Gallery is open weekdays 10am to 4pm (closed Tuesdays) and weekends 11am to 5pm. Phone 5664 0101.

Gecko Studio Gallery is hosting ‘Landscapes from the heart,’ – an exhibition of paintings by John Adam. The gallery is located at 15 Falls Road, Fish Creek and is open Thursdays through to Mondays from 10am to 5pm. Phone 5683 2481.
