Police motorcyclist airlifted to hospital

A VICTORIA Police officer was airlifted to the Royal Melbourne Hospital with non-life- threatening-injuries after coming off his motorcycle on the South Gippsland Highway at Grassy Spur shortly after midday on Thursday, August 10, 2023.

A Victoria Police spokesperson said the male Leading Senior Constable was one of two officers on patrol, each on their own motorcycle, who were riding in an easterly direction towards Foster when the crash occurred just east of Carmichaels Road.

The injured officer was following his colleague along the Highway during rainy weather conditions, and the accident was observed as it happened by the colleague who immediately stopped to assist and to render first aid.

Paramedics from Ambulance Victoria Foster Branch transported the injured officer to the Leongatha Hospital from where he was transferred by a Helimed helicopter to the RMH in Parkville where he was admitted for further treatment.

Police officers from Bass Coast, Wonthaggi, Baw Baw and Latrobe regions also attended, and the cause of the collision is being investigated and remains ongoing.

The police spokesperson said the South Gippsland Highway was closed for about two-and-a-half hours, with traffic diverted around the scene of the accident during that period.The police spokesperson  appealed to anyone who witnessed the crash, has dashcam/CCTV footage or has information to call Crime Stoppers Victoria on 1800 333 000 or submit a confidential report at www.crimestoppersvic.com.au
