MDU Football Netball Club the real winners

THE grand finals of the Alberton Football Netball League were held in perfect weather conditions at Meeniyan on Saturday with a huge crowd in attendance paying just over $32,000 at the gate.

The MDU Football Netball Club left no stone unturned to prepare a fantastic venue with the ground in magnificent condition for the four games of football, and the layout for the netball games was also a credit to them. In coming weeks a new electronic scoreboard will also be erected and new lighting is also in the pipeline, so they will have one of the best facilities going round.

The Korumburra-Bena Football Netball Club catered for the day, while the Foster Football Club handled the alcohol, with the innovative champagne tent an added attraction this year which proved popular amongst the ladies.

The day got off to an early start with the fourths football and 13 & under netball commencing at 9.00 a.m. with already a large crowd in attendance.

There were four different winners in the football with Dalyston fourths ten points winners over Inverloch-Kongwak, Fish Creek thirds 10-goal victors of the previously undefeated Dalyston fourths, Korumburra-Bena reserves getting up in controversial circumstances very late in their match against Kilcunda Bass who had led all match and Phillip Island seniors overpowering Dalyston in the last half to run out easy winners after a hard fought match.

It was Phillip Island’s first premiership since 1990 in the old Bass Valley League. They were certainly well coached and have a lot of talented youngsters who will keep them in good stead for future seasons.

In the netball Inverloch-Kongwak had a day out winning four premierships – the B grade, C grade, 15 & under and the 13 & unders. MDU won the 17 & unders easily, while flag favourites Korumburra-Bena had a runaway win in A grade.

Prior to the senior game Inverloch’s Hannah McKitterick sang the National Anthem, while South Gippsland participants in the 2014 Glasgow Commonwealth Games, Eleanor Patterson and coach David Green and Kalia Hutchinson (McKnight) were presented to the crowd then proceeded to hand out a number of footballs around the ground to some very enthusiastic youngsters.
