High-pressure water practice at CFA training day

• The CFA South Gippsland Group of brigades and the Australian Volunteer Coast Guard VF20 Port Welshpool Flotilla learned about firefighting techniques using high-pressure
water at a training day held at Port Welshpool on Sunday May 26, 2024.

SOUTH Gippsland and Bass Coast Country Fire Authority (CFA) brigades and the Coast Guard Port Welshpool practised using high-pressure water at Port Welshpool on Sunday May 26 during the first of two CFA training days scheduled for 2024.

Members of the CFA’s District 9 South Gippsland Group of brigades attending the training day included Welshpool, Hedley, Toora, Foster, Milford, Dumbalk, Fish Creek, Meeniyan, Tarwin Lower, Pound Creek and Inverloch.

About 50 CFA personnel, along with a dozen or so members of the Australian Volunteer Coast Guard VF20 Port Welshpool Flotilla, learned about using South Gippsland Water’s boosting points to access high-pressure water for firefighting purposes.

Three training checkpoints were set up on the day, with two concentrating on the procedures involved in using the boosting points to fill tankers and improve water pressure in long lengths of hose, and when employing CFA pumper appliances.

The training drills and exercises occurred on and around the Fishermen’s and Marginal wharves and the Long Jetty, which once was known as the Shipping Pier.

The third checkpoint saw training day participants looking at the role of the Coast Guard and the way it fits in to the CFA structure, and how the organisation works with other emergency services such as Victoria Police as well as the CFA.

The training day ran from 9 am until 1 pm and concluded with a luncheon prepared and served by Welshpool and district residents and community groups in the former Port Welshpool ferry terminal building.

The next South Gippsland Group of CFA brigades’ training day for 2024 will take place in late October and will look at wildfire-fighting skills.

CFA brigades and the Coast Guard Port Welshpool are always ready to welcome new members.
