PREPARATIONS are well in hand for the opening of Foster Swimming Pool on December 17 for another summer season.

Over the winter South Gippsland Shire Council commissioned a complete repaint and minor repairs to the shells of the pools at the complex. They are now looking fresh and bright and are positively sparkling having been refilled last week.

A new incorporated body has been established to replace the old Section 86 committee: Foster Swimming Pool Association Inc.

A committee of ten has been elected. President is Ian Lyon, Secretary Paul Saulwick and Treasurer Peter Burgess. Any individual or family who purchases a season ticket is eligible for membership of the association.

While the pool is under contract management the association’s main purposes are to work with the YMCA in promoting the pool and supporting operations and activities. The association will also be involved in fundraising, planning improvements to facilities and seeking grant funding.

Young swimmers (and the young at heart) will be pleased to know that Council has purchased a big new monster inflatable to replace the previous inflatable that had to be retired due to compliance issues. The YMCA has set aside some dates for inflatable fun days and these will go ahead subject to staffing, with the inflatable also perhaps in operation on particularly hot days.

Regular swimmers at Foster Pool are very pleased that Harley Morris and Kerry Duroux will again be the managing lifeguards from the YMCA for the 2016/17 season.

“They are very popular amongst the young pool users and the committee are very appreciative of their dedication and competence in managing the pool operations,” said Ian Lyon.

The 2016/17 season will run from Saturday December 17 to Tuesday March 14.

During that time a wide variety of activities are on offer:

  • Early morning Lap Swimmers Group: Mondays, Wednesdays, Fridays 7am – 9am (except public holidays);
  • Aqua Aerobics: Wednesdays 8.45am – 9.30am;
  • VicSwim: run by Kerry Duroux, January 16-20. Online pre-registration will be available.
  • Mothers Group Morning Teas: With support from Council and Foster Swimming Pool Association there will be several Mothers Morning Teas arranged over the summer. The pool will open from 10.30am to 12 noon specially for any mothers and their young children to meet, enjoy tea & cakes and give the children some fun time in the water supervised by the YMCA lifeguards. (Dates to be advised.)

YMCA will be hosting several special event days, including the School’s Out Pool Party on Tuesday December 20; the Stroke & Stride event and Hawaiian Luau both in February.

Season’s tickets will again be available through the schools, Atoll Travel and at the pool after opening.

All season tickets purchased before the Foster Street Party on Friday December 23 will go in the draw to have their membership fee refunded.
