South Gippsland enjoys an enviable unemployment rate of only 4.7% (March Quarter 2017), reflecting a prompt uptake of labour availability in the region and the vibrancy of the local business climate.
The Agriculture, Forestry and Fishing sector is by far the largest employer in the district, accounting for nearly 30% of all jobs. This is followed by Retail, Health and Community Services and Education, Accommodation and Cafe’s, Construction, Manufacturing and the Property and Business sectors.
A survey of employer sentiment conducted in February 2009, identified broad optimism about employment prospects over the next 1-5 years. At that time 64% of businesses surveyed predicted jobs growth, 35% predicted no change and just one business anticipated a minor contraction.
Retail, accommodation, cafe’s, and health and community services led the optimism, followed by education, property and business services, manufacturing, and personal and other services. All employers, with the exception of one, predicted some growth in demand for all classifications of workers, from professional through to unskilled labour.
