The maps
- show safe and accessible pedestrian routes and the facilities available in the South Gippsland towns of Leongatha, Korumburra, Mirboo North and Foster and the Bass Coast towns of Inverloch, Wonthaggi and Cowes.
- encourage people to move about with greater ease and confidence.
- encourage the use of the facilities and the environment to improve health and wellbeing, physical activity and social inclusion of all people.
- raise the profile of access and inclusion issues identified in the mapping process in order to improve access within the townships identified.
For people who have access challenges (wheelchair, walker or pram users for example) the maps show easier routes of travel, indicate where accessible parking, toilets and change facilities are as well as places to eat and relax.
The maps will be available through the Visitor Information Centre’s and on Council’s website.
The project is a collaborative partnership between the South Coast Primary Care Partnership, Bass Coast Shire Council and South Gippsland Shire Council, with support from the Transport Connections Projects at each municipality.
The project is a pilot for the Gippsland region and, funding permitting, a similar approach will be taken by the other local government areas across Gippsland.
