THE infamous Black Spur bend near Koonwarra has claimed the life of another victim, with the death of a Stoitse Transport driver on Saturday morning (May 26).
The incident occurred at about 5.45am.
The identity of the 50-year-old Meeniyan man – who died at the scene – has not been released.
Bass Coast TMU’s Leading Senior Constable Scott Simcock said the prime mover was heading east along on the South Gippsland Highway with a half-full milk tanker attached and may have been traveling too fast into the bend.
“Judging by evidence at the scene it appears the driver may have rolled after moving too fast into the bend. Given that the tanker was half full, with about 15,000 litres in it, there would have been significant load shift,” LSC Simcock said.
“The trailer consequently tipped on its side, bringing down the prime mover, which struck a rocky embankment. We’re in the initial stages of the investigation, and we will be looking at other causation factors, but speed does seem to be the main factor.
“The driver may have only been going five or 10 kilometres an hour too fast, but unfortunately he’s paid a very high price.”
Anyone with information on the accident should contact LSC Simcock on 5671 4100.
