Beware of phone scam – It’s not the ATO

SCAM phone calls purporting to be from the Australian Taxation Office are increasing in frequency, and a number of South Gippsland residents have described the callers to be quite aggressive in nature, despite some of the calls being automated.

Residents have reported that they have been told during these calls that if they don’t call the given number and provide personal details, legal action will be taken, resulting a court appearance.

Thanks to a number of recipients of these calls, the ATO has been made aware of the scams and is sending a report to the Federal Police.

Should you receive such a call, do not respond with any information. Should the ATO require any such details, correspondence would be initiated by letter, not a phone call. Do not be coerced into providing any information. Simply hang up.
