Appear at the Toora Pear Party

BE sure to make an appearance at this season’s Toora Pear Party, to be held in the Toora Heritage Pear Orchard in Mill Street from 10 am to 4 pm on Sunday March 8, 2020.

This year’s Pear Party will be the ninth in a row, and even the pear trees themselves seem to be looking forward to the event as their fruit steadily ripens.

The orchard was established in 1996 on land that was once part of the Hanbury family’s Jersey stud stock and butter enterprise, which also kept pigs to drink what was left after the cream had been skimmed.

The two-hectare site, with Muddy Creek neatly dividing it in two, was leased from the South Gippsland Shire and more than 100 pear trees representing about 60 varieties were planted on the western half.

Some of these originated from trees already growing in the Toora district and have been grafted to preserve their individual characteristics and include Michael Archangel, Clapp’s Favourite, Vicar of Winfield and Flemish Beauty.

The eastern side has sweeping lawns, shade trees, heritage roses and other types of fruit trees.

Friends of the Toora Heritage Pear Orchard member Meryl Agars said the Pear Party is “always a fun day for families, with something for people of all ages to enjoy.

“There will be live music all day on the Aherns sound stage, supervised games and activities for children, face-painting, craft and produce stalls, circle dancing, lots of food and even an exhibition of artworks by adults and children,” she said.

“The Toora Lions are holding their Big Barbecue again in aid of the Kids With Cancer charity, buskers will be performing around the orchard, and good coffee will be available!”

There will be pears at the Pear Party, of course! and party goers will be able to pick their own pears for $6 a bag, with the bags supplied on the day.

Try a glass of perry, the name for cider made from pears, and cool down with an ice cream or sorbet locally made in Toora.

Meryl thanked the Toora Pear Party’s sponsors, including the Toora Community Action Team, the Bendigo Bank’s Toora and District Community Bank, the Toora Lions Club, Storr Transport of Toora, JT Earthmoving, Aherns Fruit Market of Foster, Latte Dah Café in Toora, Toora Foodworks Supermarket, Toora Long Lost Loved Upholstery, Prom Coast Ice Cream and Sorbet in Toora, Whittle Hire of Welshpool, South Gippsland Concreters of Woorarra, and Mauzie’s Vintage Luxe of Toora.
