AFNL grand final at Wonthaggi

The Alberton Football Netball League has decided to play this year’s grand final at Wonthaggi.

Only one club applied to host this year’s big day, (Stony Creek) so it was decided to take up the offer of the Bass Coast Shire to hold it at Wonthaggi as their facilities and ground are considered superior.

League president John Schelling told The Mirror this week that “as most of our clubs have spent money and time on their infrastructure over the past few years we have wanted to reward them by allocating a final at as many grounds as we can. This year we have based them around which club has the catering so as they can maximize their work by having the canteen as well as the bar and do not have to cater in another club’s canteen.

“We looked at the possibility of having a night final at Foster but still have some issues with some clubs having never played at night, security challenges and how to fit the netball around the footy due to lighting on the courts etc. A proposal is going out from the board to play a night pre-season competition to allow clubs to experience night footy next year.

“We also looked at which clubs had games late in the season at home with most of the finals venues having little traffic on them late in the year and then tried to set up grounds to reduce travel as well as allocating finals at both ends of the league. There may be the odd change if the senior ladders differ at the end of the season.

“With only one application (Stony Creek) to host the Grand Final from within our league we have taken up the invitation of the Bass Coast Shire to play it at Wonthaggi which is very cost effective and will hopefully maximize our crowd while giving the players a terrific surface to do battle on. This then puts more funds back into the league which therefore benefits every club financially.”

• August 24, elimination final, 3 v. 6, at Korumburra.
• August 25, elimination final, 4 v. 5, at DWWWW.
• August 31, 2nd semi final, 1 v 2, Phillip Island.
• September 1, 1st semi finals, Toora.
• September 7, preliminary final, Tarwin.
• All home clubs do catering.
• September 14, grand final at Wonthaggi with Korumburra-Bena catering.
