Buyers stream in to Library’s Friends’ winter book sale

KEEN buyers and curious browsers alike streamed into the Friends of Corner Inlet Libraries’ book sale held in the Foster War Memorial Arts Centre on Friday and Saturday July 5 and 6, 2019, making it the best winter sale for three years.

Friends member Christine McKinlay said the one-and-a-half-day sale returned a profit of $2598.50, to be spent on new items for the Foster and Welshpool branches of the West Gippsland Libraries.

“While I haven’t done the actual sums, at an average of 50 cents per book that amount means a lot of books were sold!” she laughed.

“We were really pleased with the number of people who came to the sale, and we think that the mild weather was in our favour this time.

“There was a heatwave during our summer sale in January, and there was rain and hail at last year’s winter one,” Christine said.

“We had a steady stream of people all day on Friday, and what’s interesting lately is we’re getting more people through on the Saturday than we used to in the past.

“We also got lots of comments, with quite a few people saying things like what a wonderful selection of good quality books we had on offer,” she said

“People also remarked on the pleasant atmosphere the classical music we had playing created at the sale.

“The Foster Arts Music and Drama Association’s new tiered seating stored in the hall also helped, as we were able to display a lot of books on it, particularly the children’s books, face out, which makes them much easier to see,” Christine said.

“At this sale we quite often saw children with their fathers choosing books; perhaps their mothers were away on the other side of the hall looking at books for themselves!

“All in all, the sale was a great success, thanks to the volunteers, especially the small band of men who worked so hard to set up the sale and to pack up afterwards,” she said.

“A really big thank you must also go to the public for their support of our book sales, too, and clearly, books are still in!”

The next Friends of Corner Inlet Libraries book sale will be held this coming summer on Friday and Saturday January 3 and 4, 2020, again in the Foster War Memorial Arts Centre.

Donations of all genres of books, film and music discs and magazines in good condition are always welcome and may be left at the Foster Library in Main Street during opening hours.

Alternatively, donors may contact Friends of Corner Inlet Libraries representative Christine McKinlay on 5682 2349 to arrange collection.
