Blaze closes Prom

WILSONS Promontory National Park will be closed during the Labour Day long weekend, as an out-of-control blaze threatens the Tidal River campsite.

Crews have been struggling to suppress the fire, which was raging through inaccessible terrain, 3.5 km north of the site on Monday.

The bushfire was about 200 hectares and burning in inaccessible terrain, towards Wilsons Promontory Road.

Boat users are reminded that they cannot come ashore.

As The Mirrorwent to print, the official comment from Parks Victoria was that the fire could impact Tidal River in the coming days, and asset protection works were being undertaken to protect the area.

Staff, who were gearing up for the busy tourist period, have been confined to working at Yanakie.

Visitors with camping and accommodation bookings during this period will be contacted to receive a full refund. Smoke from the fires will continue to be visible in the local communities and firefighting personnel and vehicles will be in the area.
