A prelude to the announcement of the winners of the Great Southern Portrait Prize on Sunday April 29 at 2.30pm at Stockyard Gallery, Foster.
This will be the seventh Great Southern Portrait Prize this year and over the last six years there has been some earnest discussions at Prom Coast Arts Council meetings, at the Portrait Prize exhibition especially just after the winners have been announced and to be sure, whenever two or more people get together and the subject of the Portrait Prize and the art of portraiture in general is raised.
Remember the first year when Neil Stanyer won a prize with a brass lantern with photo negatives against the inside of the glass panels? Or the year when there was a photo portrait of the back of a man’s head? When a photographic portrait won a prize? Look at the winner of this year’s Archibald – Tim Storrier with a self-portrait with no face. There is always controversy and varying views of what is portraiture.
There will be a panel with some of the judges along with some invited artists and talking heads. Come and give us your two bob’s worth, engage in some serious discussion and have some fun at the same time. Light refreshments available.
