The Kids Are All Right – 2010 – US – Comedy/Drama – ‘MA’ Rated

Review by PCFS member Genevieve Moore.
In this contemporary themed film, Nic and Jules are a middle aged couple and parents to two teenagers. The children decide to find out who their biological father is which leads to some very funny moments and culminates in some wonderfully scripted and portrayed dramatic scenes. The writers have skilfully used comedy to take the audience through some quite challenging concepts around betrayal, power imbalances within relationships, and family dynamics.

‘The Kids Are Alright’ and the actor Annette Bening both received Golden Globe awards in 2010. The film also received four Academy Award nominations in the same year. The film has received critical acclaim with At the Movies hosts David Stratton and Margaret Pomeranz each giving it four stars. Other reviews have included comments such as ‘The Kids Are All Right is warmly recommended to anyone in search of smart, grown-up entertainment.’; ‘A bittersweet family drama-edy that challenges the perceptions of the perfect family…’ The film has an MA 15+ rating.
