Wilsons Promontory Reopens.

Wilsons Promontory will reopen at 9am on Friday 15 March.

Lightning ignited a fire on the 1 March at Mt Leonard which spread to 323 hectares and burnt to within 150m of the Promontory Road and 2.5km north of Tidal River.

Incident controller Mark Gunning said, “Fire crews have worked hard in remote and difficult terrain to contain the fire over the past 11 days. He also thanked locals and visitors for their patience and support while we have worked to control the fire”

“Aircraft have supported the ground crews to contain the spread of fire so that the Prom will now be safe to reopen”.

“Fire crews and aircraft will remain in the area to continue to work on the fire. Fire authorities ask visitors to take care when in proximity to these resources”

“Visitors will be able to enter the park from 9am on Friday. Existing camping, overnight hikes and accommodation bookings for the weekend will remain in place”

“I encourage everyone to stay informed by visiting the VicEmergency website, downloading the VicEmergency app, calling 1800 226 226 and tuning in to local radio”
