Pear Party this Sunday

THE fifth annual Toora Heritage Pear Orchard ‘Pear Party’ is to be held this Sunday (March 13) from 10am to 4pm and promises to be a fun-filled family-friendly day with plenty of activities, demonstrations, games, art, food and entertainment.

Presented by the Friends of Toora Heritage Pear Orchard Inc., the Pear Party will be held in the grounds of the orchard in Mill Street, Toora.

The inaugural Pear Party was held in March 2012 to celebrate the opening of a new bridge on the property, provided by the South Gippsland Shire Council to replace the original bridge which had been destroyed by flooding the previous year.

The event was so well received by locals and visitors that the Friends decided to make it an annual event and each year, the Pear Party gets bigger and better – providing an enjoyable and informative day for all the family.

Techniques of pruning and grafting will be demonstrated and gardening gurus will be on hand to share tips on general gardening.

There will be a lively atmosphere, with live music all day featuring local talent and a variety of stalls.

What would a Pear Party be without pears? The Heritage Orchard has around 60 varieties of pears and some will be available to sample. You are welcome to pick your own for just $6 per bag (bags supplied).

A great variety of food and refreshments will be available to purchase and pleasant spots for lunch can be found under shady trees. Why not enjoy some cider made from the orchard’s pears?

Members of the Toora & District Family History Group will have a display of information on local history and will share information on how to go about researching your own family history.

There will be plenty to keep the kids entertained, including supervised games and activities.

New this year will be lucky draws which will take place every half hour. March 13 could just be your lucky day!

Pear up your visit with a little art appreciation by dropping in to the Toora Village Studio Gallery (within the Windmill complex in Stanley Street) to view the entries upon the theme ‘There’s a Pear in There……or something that rhymes with ‘pear.'” Best in Show will be announced at the gallery at 3pm. The children’s colouring competition entries, as well as Toora Primary School’s art display, usually on show at the Pear Orchard, will also be displayed in the gallery’s front room.

Sunday March 13 promises to be a day full of enjoyment and interest at Toora, so mark it in your diary and join in the fun! Entry is by donation.
