Ladies Champion of Champions

South Gippsland Bowls Division

NICOLE ‘Nics’ McKenzie showed what a natural athlete she is by taking out the South Gippsland Bowls Division Ladies Championship on January 6-7 at Korumburra.

Nics has played top level netball for Foster for many years, but she only took up bowls in recent years, starting with ‘barefoot’ community bowls at Foster, before going onto competition bowls with Fish Creek three or four years ago.

She was Fish Creek’s Ladies Bowls Champion last year and this season.

All 16 South Gippsland clubs played at Korumburra on January 6 to decide the division champion.

Eight matches in the morning resulted in eight ladies progressing to the quarterfinals in the afternoon. There were some really close matches throughout the day.

Semi-finals were played the next day between Dulcie Mortlock (Foster) and Robyn Dennis (San Remo) and Marj Pearson (Meeniyan) and Nics McKenzie (Fish Creek), with some great bowling.

The final was played between Dulcie, who has won the title 11 times, and Nics. It was a great seesawing game, with Nics emerging as the winner and Dulcie having to settle for second place for the second time.

The bowls clubs would like to thank all players, markers and umpires and the Korumburra members for looking after everyone so well.

Winner Nics will now play West Gippsland in the Strzelecki Bowls Region final on February 14 at Trafalgar Bowling Club.
