Allies go into recession

– Only six teams left in AFNL

THE news quickly got around late Friday afternoon when the Devon Welshpool Won Wron Woodside Football Netball Club contacted the Alberton Football Netball League and sent out the following statement:

It is will much regret and sadness that the committee of the Devon Welshpool Won Wron Woodside Football Netball Club Inc. announce that we have made the difficult decision to go into recess for season 2018.

A Special General Meeting will held on April 5, 2018, at the Alberton West Recreation Reserve for all financial members and Life Members. The decision was made due to a lack of players and no chance of finding enough before our first game in two weeks.

President Sarah Kidd told The Mirror on Monday that in the end the lack of commitment from locals had been the main reason for their shock decision.

“The club only had enough players for one team, with a lot of them only reserves players who would not play senior football.

“The numbers in the thirds were also not good, with not enough local boys willing to train.

“It was a very hard decision to make but in the end we had to give the league and the other clubs time to adjust before the start of the season.

“We intend to do a lot of fundraising over the next 12 month to help out with our finances, and also have let all past players know by letter that any money owing to them will be paid as soon as the club can.”

The Alberton Football Netball League will meet tonight, Wednesday, March 28 to address the situation and compile a new draw.

Tarwin will still play hosts to MDU this Saturday with the other four clubs playing the following week in round one.
